Technical Info: Forms

A selection of products is available in different forms such as: Sheets, Discs, Rolls, belts, PSA Paper Discs, Flap Wheels and Specialties.

SHEETS

The abrasive sheets are cut to the standard size of 9" x 11" and come in paper or cloth, selected according to the severity of the sanding operation. They are used by hand or with oscillating sanders and employed for handcraft or in parts with difficult access for mechanical sanding.

DISCS

These are circular or octagonal shaped coated abrasives with a vulcanized fiber backing. The most common diameters are those of 7" x 7/8" and those of 9 1/8" x 7/8". The durability and strength of their materials make them adequate for high-speed portable tools.

Type of Discs:

  1. Circular With Center Hole: Standard form and is fixed to the grinder by locating the center hole onto the spindle and this being held by a retaining nut.

  2. Circular With No Center Hole

    1. Usually held on to a suitable back-up by means of a pressure sensitive adhesive.

    2. Commonly referred to as PSA discs and can be produced in Paper or Cloth backings. Not suitable for Fiber backings.

PSA PAPER DISCS

These are special treated open coat material, excellent for finishing of primers, body putty, basecoat and clearcoat finishes, acrylic lacquers and dry feather edging. The pressure sensitive adhesive makes these discs easy to use, for dry sanding only.

ROLLS

These are abrasive sections that come in different widths, from 3/8" up to 55" and in lengths up to 100 yards. Depending on the type of product, they can be used by hand, drum sanders or contact wheels.

BELTS

The belts are endless abrasive sections, the ends of which have been joined at a certain angle. They come in various widths, from ¼" up to 65", and in means of belt machines, stationary or portable, among which are the backstand, vertical or horizontal platen grinder, conveyorized belt grinders, swing grinders, centerless, portable belt sanders and others. All these basic machines have been developed into production equipment according to present rates of productivity and quality finishes. Belts are used for mass production work where sanding productivity is important and are the coated abrasive form with the highest industrial demand worldwide.

FLAP WHEELS

These abrasive products are made of aluminum oxide resin bond coated abrasives, ideal tools for grinding and polishing small parts, narrow curves, cavities, concave and convex areas as well as flap surfaces. Used in a variety of industrial applications, mainly in automotive and metalworking.

SPECIALTIES

These are abrasive products with very specific designs and shapes, such as: abrasive stars, body files, spiral bands, anti-skidding strips, cones, cartridges and many others. Most of them are used in portable machines.

Coated abrasives can be manufactured into any shape or form the end user may require – whether or not such shapes can be economically converted is another story. The cost of specialty forms must be taken into consideration with the work done – specialties are usually hand made and can have a high initial cost.

Here we consider the most common (and obviously economical forms or shapes) specialty products.

  1. Spiral bands: A spiral band consists of winding a piece of coated abrasive spirally over an opposite spirally wound un-coated cloth. The abrasive backing and the un-coated cloth or interliner are adhered together with a special adhesive. Spiral bands are used on a rubber drum which expands due to centrifugal force when run at relatively high speed. Thus spiral bands must be manufactured to have an exact internal diameter – width of spiral band is limited by the length of the mandrel on which they are wound. Spiral bands are obviously not flexible and are used on a spindle grinder for many small and intricate grinding applications.

  2. Uniflow Bands: Basically a small belt – used in similar applications to spiral bands; however, possess greater flexibility because there is no interliner. A uniflow band is defined as a small belt that can be manufactured from a 230 mm x 280 mm (9" x 11") sheet – any dimension outside this form is classified as a belt. Uniflow bands are ordered by width and circumference of the band.

  3. Cones: Basically a section of coated abrasive made up into a cone shape. Being a cone shape the product diameter varies and thus this form can be used where curved section of varying radii need to be sanded.

  4. Cloth Assemblies: Basically pieces of scored abrasive held in an assembly of a number of such pieces by an un-coated cloth looped at one end. Used mainly on the Vonnegut head for shape sanding in the furniture industry.
